It was at the Competition for Low Cost Furniture Design organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York that Charles and Ray Eames presented their designs for the Plastic Chair Group for the first time. In 1950, the Plastic Side Chair and the Plastic Armchair were the very first industrially produced plastic chairs to go on the market. Because the Eameses subsequently designed different bases, the range of applications for the Plastic Chair continuously grew. It became an icon of furniture design and, in addition to domestic living areas, millions of them were and are used in offices, health care institutions, restaurants, lecture halls, airports and sports stadiums.
To complement this popular product line, Vitra has now reintroduced the fully upholstered Eames Plastic Chair, which was once manufactured for many years. The organically shaped shells, along with the upholstery, offer exceptional comfort and exude a cosy atmosphere.
The high-quality polyurethane foam upholstery is moulded directly onto the plastic shell and then covered with a robust material that is attached to the shell with beading in black or white. The bases are attached to the shell with four screws, and can be replaced. This means that the fully upholstered Eames Plastic Chair is ideally suited not only for domestic living areas, but is also an affordable solution for offices, restaurants and waiting areas.
